Ben Taylor Finally Comes Home

Known all over Grass Valley as the man on Horseback, Ben Taylor got married, panned for gold, started the Buena Vista Cattle Ranch, owned a store, owned a hotel, rented horse pulled wagons for hauling, built a toll road between the Colfax Trans continental railroad train station and Grass Valley, went back to Missouri twice buying herds of cattle then drove them over land to Grass Valley to sell beef to the gold miners.

Just when you thought he didn’t have time to do anything else, he built an amazing Gothic Cathedral architectural style estate home in walking distance to downtown Grass Valley. In this home, in what is now known as the Music Room, is a photo printed on metal of Ben Taylor’s son-in-law, CH Barker, mounted on his Paint horse. His saddle sits on a stand immediately below CH Barker’s picture. Viewed together takes you back to years past.  1866 was the year Ben Taylor finished building his estate home. This very home is now available for short term renting. Now you can experience it too.  The home, the pictures, the furnishings all make you think, “Ben Taylor has made it home”.
